FORMER Wanderers players joined forces with Bolton Golf Club to organise a charity drive to raise cash for Prostate Cancer UK and The Christie.

A brainchild of Bolton captain Richard Hurst and ex-Whites star Roy Greaves, the fundraising event proved a massive success, bringing in close to £10,000 for the two worthy causes.

The team of John McGinlay, Steve Taylor, Peter Nicholson and Mike Walker won a sell-out main competition – but much more money was raised during the prize presentation dinner, which included a raffle and auction.

“As captain of the club I had the privilege of being able to choose a charity to support during my year,” Hurst explained. “So as someone who has suffered from prostate cancer, the obvious choice was Prostate Cancer UK, who raise money for valuable research.

“There are a number of other members of the club who have suffered from prostate cancer so there was little hesitation that we should organise a fundraising golf day and an organising committee was soon formed.

“Shortly after I met Roy, who mentioned that he, and other former players, wanted to do something in memory of Gary Jones, who had recently succumbed to cancer. The idea of running a combined fundraising day was born.

“I am delighted to say the day was a great success, the weather was kind and everyone enjoyed themselves. Most importantly, we raised money for two very worthy causes.”
