WESTHOUGHTON Golf Club have won the Lancashire Ladies Golf Association Bronze Shield for the first time in their history.

The ladies have played in the South West Division Group Two, competing against clubs from as far afield as Liverpool and Southport where, this year they beat a team from the prestigious Royal Birkdale home and away.

As group winners they went on to the divisional play-off at Worsley where they beat a strong team from Hurlston Hall to become South West champions.

They then went on to meet the other area winners in the semi-finals at Ashton and Lea Golf Club in Preston, beating the holders for the last three years, Shaw Hill.

The final was held on Monday, again at Ashton and Lea, where they beat local rivals Bolton Old Links.

The success crowns a successful year in office for lady captain Katy Leach, who plays for the team and won a competition to meet competitors in this year's Ricoh British Open at Woburn Golf Club where she played a round with world number 14, Minji Lee from Australia.
