YOUNG Bolton cricketer Haseeb Hameed picked up Lancashire County Cricket Club’s main Player of the Year award on Thursday night.

The 19-year-old former Bolton School pupil and Farnworth Social Circle batsman has enjoyed a landmark breakthrough season at Emirates Old Trafford, capped by selection for the England Test team for the forthcoming tour to Bangladesh.

He recently received his county cap, becoming the youngest player since the Second World War to receive one.

And earlier this week, he was voted professional young player of the year at the Asian Cricket Awards.

The honours are just reward after a season to remember opening the batting for the Red Rose side, hitting four centuries and seven half-centuries in his first full season in First Class cricket.

Hameed also made history, becoming the first cricketer ever to score two centuries in a Roses County Championship fixture at Emirates Old Trafford against Yorkshire.

His form received praise from Lancashire director of cricket Ashley Giles and England coach Trevor Bayliss and after making the 17-man touring party, Hameed has been tipped to open the batting on tour alongside England skipper Alastair Cook.

The youngster is determined to seize his opportunity to impress.

Hameed told Sky Sports: “The way I see it is I’m looking to get into that side for the first Test and that starting XI.

“I’ll have to work hard and prepare for that.

“If you’re playing for your country, you should feel pressure because, at the end of the day, you’ve been selected from a massive group of players. To have got selected into the 17-man squad in itself is a great achievement for me.

“But I also think it’s important that I see it as just the start.

“It’s great getting the call-up but it’s about going out there and putting in performances now.”
