But 164 hardy runners would not be put off and completed a saturated 5k course around Leverhulme Park, while 23 volunteers stood in the freezing cold to make the event possible.

At the front of the field was Tom Carson whose record of finishing first now stands at nine times in 10 appearances at Bolton.

The Horwich RMI Harrier clocked 18mins 4secs, his slowest time yet but worthy of pride in such difficult conditions.

He was followed across the finish line by Daniel Knight in 19:25 and then Robert Short, of Burnden Road Runners, in 19:33.

Saturday's weather was not the kind in which you expect anyone to turn up who has not been before. But there were 10 first timers and 11 runners recorded new personal bests, while representatives of 20 different athletics clubs took part.

Pamela McCrossan (VW55-59) of Clydesdale Harriers, was first female (15th overall) over the line in 22:08 on her first appearance at Bolton.

She was followed by Olivia Kearney (SW18-19) of Bolton United Harriers and AC (18th overall) who ran 22:30 to earn her second PB in three weeks.

Katherine Baines (SW30-34) of British Military Fitness, was third female in 23:18.

Andy Sutton’s new PB of 23:41 on his 18th run at Bolton was his fourth at Bolton.

Julie Morrison also ran her fourth PB on her seventh run at Leverhulme Park. Her new time of 35:34 is exactly eight minutes quicker than her first appearance.

The Bolton event is counting down to its 300th landmark run with Saturday's the 293rd since it began in February, 2011.

Runner of the week: 10-year-old Holly Turner ran her 50th parkrun on Saturday. She has run 16 of them at Bolton, with visits to nine other parkruns also under her belt.
