HORWICH ladies remain unbeaten and top of the Greater Manchester Hockey League Division Four after a 5-0 thumping of Prescot Ladies on Sunday.

Becks Morrissey produced an inspired performance, scoring three goals and making one assist, as Horwich made it seven wins out of seven games this season.

Morrissey made an immediate impact, intercepting a pass and driving through the Prescot midfield before setting up woman-of-the-match Zoe Bluer for the first goal in the opening minutes.

Donna Vinten set up Morrissey for the second goal and the pair combined again to make it 3-0, this time Vinten the scorer.

As Prescot pressed Helen Roocroft hit them on the counter attack, and put the fourth goal on a plate for Morrissey to get her hat-trick.

Shannon Leeson stood up to inject the ball from a short corner straight to Morrissey who swiped and scored the final goal of the game with the first half still not over.

The ladies have an important match against second-placed Didsbury Greys third team on Saturday.

Horwich men’s team got their season back on track with a comprehensive 6-1 victory over the University of Salford men’s first team to move them up to sixth in the table.

Horwich went into the game with a plan to pressure Salford’s defence from the first whistle.

And it paid off when man-of-the-match Tom Mair got Horwich’s first goal in the fourth minute.

Tony Sanderson then got in on the act, capitalising on pinpoint passes to him from David Whiteside, Callum Lyall and Paul Buckland to score a rapid-fire hat-trick and put Horwich 4-0 up in the first half.

Salford pulled one back just before the break, and six minutes into the second half Andy Robertson split the Salford defensive to make it 5-1 before Sanderson grabbed his fourth.

Horwich meet eighth-placed Bolton Men's third team on Saturday.
