HORWICH Cycling Club have once again showed how strong they are across all age groups by winning the regional cyclo cross team prize.

The local club – who have won the North West Cyclo cross League 13 times – are preparing for the final North West race on Tuesday in Macclesfield before several of their number travel to Bradford to compete in the National Championships on January 7 and 8.

Their team title recognises their strength across all categories – seniors, veterans and women – highlighting the club's commitment and strength in depth.

Horwich's quality was illustrated when they had nine members competing in the recent North of England Cyclo Cross Championships in York.

A number of national and World Cup riders took part in the competition between the three northern leagues – the North West, Yorkshire and North East.

A club spokesperson said: "The Horwich jersey could be seen in almost every category.

“Team spirit was high with Horwich members making the journey to assist the lads competing.”

Dave Powell finished 24th and Craig Sefton 31st in the senior category, and Ben Horrobin was 12th in the junior event.

In the age-group races Andy Brindle was 21st, Joe Heywood 42nd and Martin Horrobin 73rd in the veteran over-40 event, Andy Porter was 23rd in the over-45s, and Dave Headon was 32nd and Mick Speirs 33rd in the over-50s.

The club's non-cyclo cross members are building up for the 2017 road season for which they will prepare on training trips to Wales and Spain.
