CYCLING brothers Matt and Tom Rotherham did their chances of Team GB selection a power of good after claiming four silver medals and one bronze between them at the British National Track Championships.

The former Canon Slade pupils, from Deane, won silver along with Sportcity Velo team-mate Joel Partington in the team sprint on Sunday to cap a superb weekend for the siblings at the National Cycling Centre in Manchester.

They were also both on the podium in the men’s keirin on Friday night when Matt, aged 22, finished second, just behind Welsh former Team GB rider Lewis Oliva and one place ahead of younger brother Tom, 19.

Matt was in the top four fastest qualifiers in the men’s sprint, completing the 200m in 10.028secs.

He went on to beat his brother in the second round and Team GB paralympic pilot rider Peter Mitchell in the quarter-finals before losing to eventual winner and current Team GB-funded sprinter Ryan Owens in the last four.

Oliva then beat Matt 2-0 in the bronze medal race.

Tom got over defeat to his sibling in the sprint to claim a third medal of the championships in the 1km time trial, edged into second place by three-time gold medal winner Dan Bigham.

Both brothers admit they still have plenty of work to do if they are to force their way into Team GB reckoning.

But Matt said: “Our performances at the weekend showed the selectors that we are still in the mix.

“We are still there knocking on the door, and there is not much more that we can do.

“There is a tinge of disappointment that we weren’t able to win a gold or set more personal bests to really make a statement they couldn’t ignore, but all in all it was a good weekend for us.”
