TOM Lancashire secured qualification for next month’s European Indoor Championships in Belgrade when he finished second in the Great Britain trials yesterday.

The Bolton 1500m runner was the favourite to win the race in Sheffield after returning to top form following an injury-free couple of years and being taken on by middle distance legend Steve Cram as his coach last October.

A slow race played into the hands of in-form 800m specialist Elliot Giles who just had too much for 31-year-old Lancashire – who was wearing his Bolton Harriers vest – in a fast last lap to win in 3mins 45.59secs.

The former Turton High School pupil from Bromley Cross showed his class the previous week when he clocked an impressive 3:39.96 in an international meeting in Germany on his first outing of the season.

On Saturday he won his heat comfortably to earn a place in the final and is now targeting a medal in Belgrade.
