BOLTON cyclist Matt Rotherham scooped two golds at the UCI Para-cycling Track World Championships in Los Angeles.

The Deane rider picked up his maiden world title on Saturday alongside James Ball in the tandem 1km time trial, their time of 1mins 00.727secs one of the fastest in history, before the pair added another gold in the men’s tandem sprint 24 hours later, beating team-mates Neil Fachie and Craig Maclean in that final.

It capped a fine weekend for the former Canon Slade pupil who was pilot alongside visually-impaired Ball.

Rotherham said: “I’ve been to the junior world championships when I was younger, came close but didn’t quite get it.

“To pull a jersey on, it’s been great.

“Going against your teammates, it’s a lot harder, but we knew we’d gone quick in qualifying.”

Ball added: “We’ve only been training together since January, so I’ll take that.”

Overall, Great Britain Cycling Team won eight golds, four silvers and two bronze medals at the championships.
