BOLTON sprint star Teddy Pender has won his second USA colleges' title in two years.

The former Bolton School pupil and Bolton Metro swimmer won the 100 yards freestyle event at the recent New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Swimming Championship.

His latest success comes 12 months after he took the men's 50 yards freestyle title and finished second in the 100 yards and 200 yards freestyle events.

Swimming for Bates College, he won the race at Wesleyan University, Middletown, Connecticut by a winning margin of just 0.05secs in a time of 44.83.

The time set a new Bates College record, beating the record he set last year by 0.40.

It was also good enough to qualify for the National Collegiate Athletic Association Championships in Shenandoah, Texas, later this month.

Pender, who left Bolton School in 2014 to study at Bates College, Maine, is ranked 10th in both the 50m and 100m freestyle events for the NCAA championships.

He said of his title triumph: “Winning the NESCAC 100 freestyle title has been a goal from the beginning of the season. But it was fantastic to actually have it happen.

"I felt a little tired before the final, so I was like 'get under 45, let’s just rip it and see what happens. I was pumped to hit my target and get an NCAA qualifying time.”

Commenting on Pender’s NESCAC success, Bates College head swim coach, Peter Casares said: “Teddy’s accomplished great things while at Bates.

"His national level swims and college records are well deserved. We’re excited to see how he swims at the NCAA championship meet.”

In addition to his 100-yard freestyle victory, Pender was also part of the Bates 200-yard medley relay team that came third in the finals to also qualify for the NCAA championships.
