SHARPLES A and Forrest F finished off the season in style with cup final victories in the Bolton Badminton League handicap competitions.

Sharples A, ninth in Section B, won the Jane Fletcher Memorial Cup with a 400-378 victory over Markland B – sixth in Section A – after benefitting from a generous handicap.

Markland Hill won every game but Sharples steadily built up their points tally.

Hill’s Kath Mahoney and Ben Jackson won the opening games 21-13, 21-7 against Marion Anderson and Rob Trethewey, and Bev Hamblett and David Saunders claimed the next two games 21-11, 21-14 against Amy Larcombe and Andy Woods who won a good amount of points.

Markland’s Lucy Ault and Bill Hamblett then beat Alison Saunders and Gareth Fairclough 21-10, 21-8 before the first couples’ clash saw Hamblett and Saunders achieve Hill’s best result, 21-3, 21-8, against Anderson and Trethewey.

Mahoney and Jackson won the second couples’ clash 21-18, 21-7, Larcombe and Woods achieving a good points score for Sharples.

Going into the level doubles Markland Hill were leading 210-99 and Ault and Hamblett won the first pair of ladies’ games 21-17, 21-11 against Saunders and Anderson who scored the most amount of points for their team.

The first pair of men’s games saw a 21-7, 21-10 win for Hamblett and Saunders against Fairclough and Trethewey.

The final four games went Hill’s way and in the final pair of ladies’ games Ault and Mahoney defeated Saunders and Larcombe 21-10, 21-9.

Hamblett and Jackson won 21-10, 21-7 against Fairclough and Woods in the last pair of men’s games and the handicap granted Sharples 220 points.

In the Robert Cup Forrest F – eighth-placed in Section C – beat Section D leaders Roe Green 374-343.

Forrest won the first four games, Georgina King and Pete Lambert beating Jaki Chapman and Jack Armstrong 21-5, 21-12 before Linda Rigby and Shalin Patel beat Debbie Batchelor and Adrian Beardow 21-14, 21-18.

In the third couple’s clash Roe Green’s Christine Manning and Kam Cheung won the first 21-17, and Clare Stopford and Forrest’s Ray Schofield took the second 21-14.

King and Lambert took both the first couples’ games 21-13, 21-9 against Roe Green’s Batchelor and Beardow.

Forrest’s Rigby and Patel claimed both games 21-13, 21-6 against Chapman and Armstrong when the second couples met.

Stopford and King won the first pair of ladies’ games 21-11, 21-11 against Roe Green’s Manning and Batchelor and Schofield and Lambert won the first pair of men’s games 21-8, 21-9 against Cheung and Beardow before Stopford and Rigby claimed the second pair of ladies’ games 21-15, 21-14 against Manning and Chapman.

Forrest’s Schofield and Patel won the final pair of men’s games 21-12, 21-8 against Cheung and Armstrong.

Roe Green were granted another 129 points in the handicap but it was not enough.
