HORWICH'S Nick Leigh was first in the local Curley's 5k trail series opener in a race featuring many of the club's runners.

Most used it as a warm-up for other racing last weekend and Keith Lewthwaite, despite a tumble at Curley’s, went on to do a smart time at the Haigh Woodland parkrun.

Mark Kmiec then took on the Ulverston Triathlon alongside fellow joint RMI and Tri-Rivington member, Paul Sykes. Meanwhile, Michael Salmon and Kristina Mountain doubled up by doing Curley’s and then the Darwen half marathon.

The endurance globetrotting Julie Williamson took on the marathon in Rome, while nearer home the vets and juniors enjoyed success.

Tony Hesketh and Mary White were V65 winners at Curley’s, Graham Schofield was first M60 at Pendle Fell Race and Rudolf Maciejkowicz was second M65 in the Liverpool Half Marathon.

In the 10-mile race in Liverpool, Lesley Davidson took a break from parkruns to take second prize for the F60 category.

Elsewhere, track and field featured strongly for the juniors.

At the Warrington AC open meeting Sophie Walton won three under-15s' events, the 100m in 13secs, 200m in 26.7 and the long jump.

Isabella Merritt, at u13s, won both the 150m in 21.2 and the 800m in 2:29, while Sam Keenan won the shot put competition. The Winter Warmer event took place in Stanley Park, Blackpool and in the u11s girls’ events Pip Nuttall scored second place in both the long jump and the 600m, as well as a third place in the 80m.

It was the second round of the English Fell Junior Championships in West Yorkshire where a turnout of eight Harriers were supported to good results by new mascot, Harley.

Last week the seniors were competing in the first round of the English Fell Championships at Long Mynd and Phil Marsden did his ambitions for honours no harm with 19th place in a big competitive field.

Isaac Battye was first home at Queens Park junior parkrun.
