CANON Slade's Year 8 and Year 9 football teams have done a town title double by both becoming Bolton champions.

The Year 9s beat Turton High School 2-0 in the final to win the George Fell Cup, Toby Ellis and Ben To getting the goals.

Half of the team followed up the following day by winning an an invitation five-a-side tournament at Bury Grammar School, beating the hosts 5-4 on penalties in the final after the game ended 1-1 in normal time.

In the Bolton cup final, Ellis put Canon Slade ahead with a header midway through the first half.

To gave his side some breathing space when he produced some good work on the wing before delivering a cross which took a deflection off a Turton player.

Canon Slade were the only state school to be invited to the five-a-side tournament.

They won every game in their group which also consisted of Bolton School, Bury Grammar, Stockport Grammar and Arnold KEQMS before beating Liverpool College 3-0 in the semi-final.

Goalkeeper Christian Park was the hero in the final when he scored one penalty and saved one before Nathan Brooks converted the deciding spot kick.

The Year 8 team beat Rivington and Blackrod 3-2 to with their Bolton town cup.

Canon Slade took an early lead through Dan Ridings before the game turned on its head when Rivington equalised just before half time and then took the lead.

A thrilling and evenly-contested match had more twists in store, however, with Canon Slade hitting back in the last 10 minutes, Ridings equalising with his second of the game before Billy Ryding scored the winner five minutes from time.

The cup glory was just one of the Year 8's successes in a season which has also seen them reach the semi-final of the ESFA national Open Cup – where they lost 4-1 to holders Thomas Telford – and the Greater Manchester County Cup final.
