BURNDEN’S Paul Duke led home a posse of 23 members at the Rivington 10-Mile Trail Challenge.

The demanding route proved a real test in the Sunday morning heat and Duke delivered a strong performance to finish in 1hr 16mins 50secs, 14th overall and claiming first prize in the V40 category.

The club had three members in the top 20 finishers. Mark Jackson crossed in 1:18:27, 16th overall, and Lee White was 18th overall and second V40 in 1:19:17.

Ed Ashton was next home, posting a time of 1:20:23 as he finished 21st overall and second V50.

Paula Pilling was once again the first Burnden lady to cross the line and the third female finisher, her time of 1:24:08 earning her second F40 and helping Burnden ladies to the team prize.

Pilling was followed home by Kirsty White, first F45 in 1:26:00, Lyndsay Darbyshire, second F45 in 1:34:06, and Anne Ferguson, first F55 in 1:34:51.

There were other category successes. Lucille Corrigan was fourth F45 in 1:40:31, Elaine Roper fourth F55 in 1:45:54 and Julie Newton third F50 in 1:48:42. Peter Whiteside was fourth V65 in 2:07:31.

Andy Duffy put in a strong run at the Radcliffe 10K to finish first Burndener, fifth V55 and 54th overall in a great time of 47:27.

Neil Critchley was next to finish in 53:25, less than 10 seconds ahead of the first female Burnden finisher Katy Thompson, who crossed the line in 53:33.

Jackie Oakes was third F40 in 55:41 and Gayle Gerrard fifth F40 in 56:06, while Phil Glassbrook was second M70 in 56:22.

Maria Parkinson and Trevor Fishwick travelled to Paris to take part in the city’s marathon, and they posted identical times of 5:17:44.

The second in the series of Curley’s 5K midweek races saw George Butler excel again, finishing fourth overall and third senior male in 19:33, the only Burnden member to break 20 minutes on the evening.

Duke was next, second M40 in 20:11, six seconds ahead of Marcus Taylor, who was first M45 in 20:17.

There were a clutch of other notable age-group performances. Ed Ashton was third V50 in 21:38, with Adrian Merritt fourth M40 in 21:58.

Paula Pilling was the club’s first female finisher again, this time in 22:17 to secure first place in the F40 group.

Isaline Pollitt was first F50 in 23:45 and Phil Glassbrook also won his age category, first M70 in 28:46.

Christophe Menand crossed in 22:45 to finish third V45 while Ged Turner was second V55 in 24:01. Katy Thompson was second F45 in 26:57 and there were third places for Sarah Sutcliffe (25:02) in the F40 group and Andy Staveley (25:09) in the V55 class.

Nia Bell was third F55 in 30:59 and Linda Haines fourth F55 in 33:26.

Marcus Taylor led the way for the club’s representatives in the Decathlon Bolton Duathlon which involved two 6k runs either side of a 28k bike ride.

Taylor kicked off with a 23:30 first run, followed by a 59:43 bike ride and 24:37 second run for a total time of 1:51:25.

Rob Short was the next quickest Burnden member, also coming in under two hours, with a time of 1:55:57. His run times of 24:17 and 27:00 sandwiched a bike time of 1:02:47.

Matt Barker used the event as part of his Ironman training programme and posted a total time of 2:04:32 – made up of a first run of 29:11, bike ride of 1:01:39 and second run of 29:56.

Phil Holden’s run times of 30:56 and 37:00 plus a bike ride of 1:03:40 gave him a total time of 2:15:15 while Karen Taylor’s 2:28:56 time came from runs of 35:04 and 38:26 and 1:11:13 on the bike. Maggie Slamin came home in 2:45:24 with a first run of 33:23, 1:30:04 on the bike and a 36:47 second run.

Gillian McGowan headed to Edge Hill University in Ormskirk to take part in the West Lancs Triathlon. She completed the 400m swim in 12:13, followed that up with a 20k bike time of 51:32, before completing the 5k run in 32:07 for a total of 1:44:44.
