BOLTON Golf Cot presented cheques of £1,300 to four different charities from the proceeds raised last season.

Chairman of the organisation, Brian Lee, along with the president of the Bolton Ladies Championship, Judith Lydon, and committee members, presented the total of £5,200 equally to representatives of Bolton Hospice, Derian House, Bolton Daytrippers and Churchill Ward, Royal Bolton Hospital at Great Lever and Farnworth Golf Club

The organisation has been raising money for good causes in Bolton since 1915 when captain Tom Entwistle and John Tommy Howcroft inaugurated a golf tournament to raise money to provide food parcels for Bolton men who were detained in German prison camps.

After the war the money raised each year was given to Bolton Royal Infirmary to purchase modern cots for children’s wards – which is where the name golf cot comes from.

The ladies' competition was founded after the war in 1919 and the men’s competition became a two-division event in 1933 increasing the number of competitions played throughout the year by men and ladies of all the Bolton Clubs to three.

The competitions are staged at Bolton clubs on a rota basis.

Following the creation of the National Health Service all the proceeds have been given each year to charities nominated by the men and ladies of Bolton golf clubs to benefit residents of Bolton and district.
