IT was a family affair in several races for Horwich RMI Harriers runners this week with juniors and adults competing alongside each other.

In the third race in the Bunny Run fell race series, Toby Middleton was well ahead of his father Jason and also claimed second place in the series under-15s' category.

The Anniversary Waltz fell race above beautiful Derwent Water featured great runs by Simon Pymm (ninth) and Dave Milliken in 18th winning the V50 prize, while Lucas Milliken also featured strongly in the u15s' race.

Meanwhile, in the Bolton 10K there was a close run competition between Gary Chadderton and his son Michael, who prevailed this time by one minute.

At the Bolton 10K Sean McMyler led the Horwich contingent home with Rudolf Maciejkowicz taking the M65 prize. Meanwhile in the Blackpool 10K, Paul Muller produced a scintillating time of 36mins 57secs, winning the M60 category by more than 11 minutes.

His time of 36:19 in Blackpool earlier this year gave him a UK age ranking of second for the M60 category.

At the Trafford AC track and field event at Longford Park, several of the juniors gained personal bests.

Freya Whittle and Alistair Sharrock both achieved triple PBs in the 75m and 150m sprints and in the long jump, while Benjamin Flatters got a PB at 150m.

Isabella Merritt did not get a PB but did win the gold medal for u13s at 150m and followed that up with first place for girls at the Bolton one-mile fun run.

The Baldwin sisters had a fine time at the Stanwick road races where Eva was first home in the u12s girls’ race and Lucy was running in preparation for the 2018 world challenge expedition to south India and finished fourth u15s' girl, raising £190 towards the charity event.

The club’s own popular Junior Street four-race series, sponsored by Whitecroft Garage, will be on the third Wednesday of the month from May to August.

Twenty-eight of the club’s young athletes warmed up competitively on the track for the Flemming Cup in which Oliver Gibson took top honours with Robert Seddon and Ella Pendlebury filling the medal places.

In parkrun this week Horwich runners were first home at four venues.

Michael Cayton had the quickest time of 15:46 at Bolton, setting a new record and breaking the previous best time by 20 seconds.

Richard Howarth’s first at Cuerden Valley was his fifth in five recent runs there, while Chris Farrell, winner of the Pike race last week, was first home at Witton in Blackburn.

Lindsey Brindle was first woman home in fifth place at Haigh Woodland.
