BURY boxer Scott Quigg hopes his unanimous points victory over gutsy Romanian Viorel Simion at Wembley Stadium on Saturday will set up a shot at IBF featherweight world champion Lee Selby.

In his second fight since stepping up a weight, Quigg was made to work hard in a bruising encounter against an opponent who had only previous lost once – to Selby in 2013.

But after a cagey start where Simion managed to land some good left-handers, Quigg took control to register a 117-111, 117-111, 115-113 triumph in front of nearly 90,000 fans at the national stadium.

The bout, which was a decent warm-up for the titanic heavyweight clash between Anthony Joshua and Wladimir Klitschko, which the British star won with an 11th-round stoppage, was an IBF eliminator meaning Quigg is now in line for Selby should the Welshman not fight Argentinean Jonathan Victor Barros next as is the current plan.

And Quigg is ready to step in whenever his chance comes.

He said: “This was another step on my journey to become a two weight world champion.

“I’ve been super-bantamweight world champion and I know I can do it again after stepping up to the nine stone limit.”

Selby had tweeted ‘easy work’ during the fight but Quigg responded and added: “It is easy watching from your couch – it’s not so easy in the ring.”

It was Quigg’s first fight under new trainer Freddie Roach who had stated in the build-up that the 28-year-old was the only boxer he had seen work harder than Manny Pacquiao.

And Quigg certainly had to work hard to battle 12 tough rounds against Simion who gave as good as he got in the early rounds before the Bury star got on top.

Even then, though, he was far more open than in previous fights and while a lot of Simion’s shots hit gloved defence or thin air, it will be something to work on for even bigger tests ahead for Quigg.

But on the front foot, his approach was strong with good combinations tiring his 35-year-old opponent and he noticeably move d his head a lot more.

Despite being taken the distance, Quigg was, however, happy with his night’s work.

“It was exactly how I thought it would be – he was durable and tough.

“I had to work but I felt in control and comfortable.

“When he was on the back foot, he could not do anything and it went to plan.

“Overall it is the first fight under Freddie and I’m happy.”
