VETERAN Mark Checkley took full advantage of the Bank Holiday to race on each of the three days for Lostock.

Starting in the Lake District on Saturday with the Coniston Fell race, he turned in a strong time of 2hrs 1mins 17secs over the high peaks of Coniston Old Man and the surrounding area.

Describing this race as a 'warm-up', Checkley then completed the Horwich Triathlon on Sunday in a credible time of 2:52:52, before rounding off the weekend with the Wray Caton Moor race, where he again turned in a strong time of 1:01:21.

The 55th Fellsman ultra marathon also saw very strong performances from Josie Greenhalgh and Albert Sunter.

Covering 61 miles from Ingleton to Threshfield over some of the toughest and inhospitable terrain of the Yorkshire Dales, Greenhalgh and Sunter, running as a team, completed the iconic race in 15:57:08.

The Horwich Triathlon saw further success for Lostock members with Niall Owens 20th overall in 2:00:28 and Mary White triumphing in her age group in 2:45:18.

Paul O'Brien, normally a runner, was quicker in all three disciplines than in 2016 with a final time of 2:30:20, while Andy Laycock (2:42:22), Phil Sloane (2:45:26) and Jon Tomlinson (3:20:16) all turned in strong performances.

In Scotland, James Jackson was 21st overall in the Road to the Isles half marathon, with an equally strong race from Cathy Stratton (1:54:04).
