LIGHTNING struck twice for schoolboy golfer Sean Dobson after he defended the Captain’s Day title at Dunscar Golf Club.

The Bolton School pupil, who plays off a nine handicap, shocked members last year when he won both the junior and senior prizes, aged just 11.

But he proved it was no fluke earlier this month, repeating the trick with a net score of 66 to head a 127-strong field, becoming only the second person in the club’s history to win back-to-back Captain’s Day titles.

Mark Kirkman, Dunscar president, said: “Sean is always extremely polite, courteous and an excellent role model for the younger members to look up to.

“All the members at Dunscar Golf Club are extremely proud of him and his achievements, long may they continue.”

The Captain’s Day title is the most prestigious senior prize members can play for at Dunscar, and has been running as a competition since 1909.

“The previous time the Captain’s Day title was defended was during the Second World War,” added Kirkman.

“Sean won his second major senior club competition, the Warburton Cup, just two weeks before retaining the Captain’s Day prize and in so doing became one of only four members in the club’s history to win consecutive senior majors – an excellent achievement for someone of Sean’s age.”

Sean’s father, Peter, is one of the four to win back-to-back club majors, but concedes he is not in the same league as his son.

“I am not a great golfer, certainly not as good as Sean is going to be,” said Peter. “How far he decides to take it is up to him, but I know he would like to play college golf in America.

“That would allow Sean to combine his studies, which are very important to him, with playing golf.

“The top pro golfers tend to come from the college circuit in America, so it would give him the chance to see if he was good enough to make it while also getting a good education at the same time.

“All we can do is try to back him to do that.”

Sean followed his dad on to the golf course and has been playing seriously since he was seven.

His talent has been recognised outside of Dunscar, with Lancashire picking him for their under-14s’ squad. He is due to make his county debut against Cheshire in August.

Bolton School have also granted the Year 8 pupil “gifted and talented” status for his golfing ability.

Sean’s other honours include becoming Dunscar’s youngest winner of their club championship. He also represents the Dunscar junior team, winning the league in 2015, and last year made his debut for the Bolton Golf Association junior team.
