THERE was plenty of action at all Bolton Tennis Tournament venues, Markland Hill, Lostock and Meadow Hill.

There was a shock in store for men’s doubles number four seeds, Holcombe’s Steve Darlington and Mark Hartley.

Leading 5-2 in the first set against Tyldesley’s Rob Everett and Chris Hurst, the Holcombe couple lost their way and after losing the set 7-5 there was no way back in the second set, which went Everett and Hurst’s way 6-2.

Also in the mens doubles Martin Bromley paired with impressive junior Will Hart to take on Steve Smith and Andy Hibbert and the combination of Bromley’s experience and Hart’s energy and skill prevailed in a 6-3, 6-3 victory.

In the handicap events Ollie Cavaliere is having an outstanding tournament and has reached the quarter-finals of all three events he has entered. In the veterans mixed handicap doubles Cavaliere and partner Yvonne Hunt beat Holcombe’s Richard and Pam Bracewell surprisingly comfortably 6-1, 6-3.

In the men’s singles Ben Pearson beat Richard Massey 6-4, 6-1 but then played second seed Chris Nott and lost 6-1, 6-4.

First seed Simon Roberts progressed comfortably with a 6-1, 6-0 win against seventh seed Jay Hardy. There is much anticipation of a possible Roberts-versus-Nott final, but John Lister will no doubt want to spoil that prospect.
