THREE junior Bolton United Harriers took part in the Sale Open Medal meeting at Crossford Park.

Eden Penketh was the big favourite in the under-11s 100m field, but a poor start thwarted his chances of gold. He recovered well to snaffle silver, with clubmate Vincent Worthington coming a strong third.

Harvey Kenny then cruised to 800m gold in 2mins 40secs – five seconds clear of second place.

The long jump followed with the Bolton lads occupying the entire podium. Harvey grabbed gold with his second jump of 3.93m, while Vincent and Eden were second and third respectively, both with personal bests.

The last race of the day was the 200m with all three junior Blue Vests lining up in different heats.

The time-trial format meant the tension was high but they did not disappoint, with Eden clocking the fastest time and Harvey and Vincent in a dead heat for second.

With each athlete collecting three medals each and domination in the long jump and 200m, it was a great day. There is good potential for the Bolton trio when they move up to the YDL-competitive U13 level next year.

Elsewhere at the opposite end of the age-groupings, Ilse Hemming and Allen Parkinson, two Harriers coaches, competed at Spenborough in the Northern Veterans League, recording high age-group national rankings.

Hemming competed in three F60 events and registered season's bests in them all – 15.9s for 100m (UK rank eighth), 34.1s for 200m (UK rank ninth) and 7.33m in the triple jump (UK rank third).

Although carrying an injury, Parkinson competed in the triple jump, breaking his PB three times and finishing with a new lifetime best of 9.56m.

It currently ranks him second in the M65 category and 13th on the all-time age-group list.
