THIS week's picture from bygone days was sent in by Ron Matthews and features the St Helens Road Methodist football team from around the late 1960s.

Mr Matthews sent in the picture in response to the photograph of the Bolton SSS League XI from May 1969 – the second picture with this article – that was published in the sporting nostalgia section on Tuesday, October 10.

He recognised his father, Ron Matthews Snr, on the left of the back row on the picture and said he also managed St Helens Road Methodist team.

He said: "The manager is my dad, Ronnie Matthews Snr.

"As well as managing this team he also managed St Helens Road Methodist team in the 1960s and early 1970s with much success.

"The picture sent in is of St Helens Road Methodists – one of his early teams."

Constance Booth, of Bolton, also got in touch and said: “The name of the manager was Ronnie Matthews, who also managed St Helens Road Methodist football team all through the 1960s.

"Ronnie was my dad I am his oldest child. I am proud to say that my grandson, Dale Stephens, has followed in my dad’s footsteps and is a successful Premier League footballer who now plays for Brighton and Hove Albion, so football is definitely in the family.

"My dad would have been so proud of him as we all are.”
