HORWICH Harrier Steve Thomasson put in a fast time to run under 1hr 45mins in a half marathon in the Finnish island of Fasta Åland.

It was one of a number of notable performances for the club's runners with Lynn Smith celebrating her 150th parkrun and Halloween at Pennington Flash with a time of 31:13.

In the Lake District in conditions that provoked comparison with polar climes, the club’s head coach Steve Pearson paired up with Burnden Road Runners’ Alec Cottrill in the OMM mountain marathon – a tough 2-day orienteering event.

The pair finished 101st out of 132 finishers from 166 starters. Mary White, with Macclesfield’s Margaret Huyton, was only one place behind.

Andy Ford and Dan Gilbert raced to the summit and Ford, now recovered from fell-inflicted injuries, was strong enough to hold Gilbert off to finish sixth.

Gilbert conserved some energy for the next day in the Bronte Way race, setting off from Wycoller and crossing the fabled Wuthering Heights before descending into Haworth.

He was 25th while Doug Fleming returned to form after injury with his first age-category win in some time at M55.

Simon Pymm had the highest finish for a Harrier this week on the hellraiser trail in Cheshire, but it was Chris Essex-Crosby who had probably the best result of the weekend with more than 500 night runners chasing him through the dark pine woods and sandy heaths of Delamere Forest as he finished in a fine 11th place.

For the juniors, Aidan McKenna was the sole Harrier at the Stockport indoor quadrathon at SportCity where, in the four-event competition, he finished sixth at under-11s level and achieved good times in both the 60m and 600m races.

At Queens Park junior parkrun, Horwich had four of the top five places, with Cian Healy leading Freya Whittle, Aleks Clayden and Jack Barrago home.

At Bolton parkrun, Thomas Massey and Lewis Wilkes were third and fourth, while in the V70 category Peter Heneghan achieved a 71-per-cent graded result.

There was also a return to parkrun for Suzanne Budgett at the testing Witton parkrun where she was first woman home and it was a Harriers double as Robert Seddon was first overall.
