HORWICH progressed in the Greater Manchester League All Division Cup, with a 2-0 win at Stockport Bramhall’s third team.

The two teams had met the previous week, in a league game that Horwich won 9-2 but this was a much closer affair.

High pressing and lots of possession saw Horwich a lot of early attempts in the opposition's D, but they could not quite get past the home team's keeper.

Stockport pulled off three goal-line clearances, but eventually managed to set up a counter-attack in which they won their first penalty corner of the match. With their first shot of the match, keeper Shannon Leeson made the stop, Chrissy Sanderson clearing the danger.

When they went back on the attack Horwich passed the ball around Stockport's defence with Aimee Gilmore setting up Heather Glynn for a chance and she timed the swipe just right, giving the visitors the 1-0 lead.

The second half saw more of a midfield battle, with Horwich winning more penalty corners but again unable to convert them into goals.

At the other end, penalty corners for Stockport led to two more impressive saves by Leeson.

Though only a goal to the good, Horwich were now playing with the majority of the possession.

With the defence pushing up to support the midfield, Stockport were unable to get out of their half, thanks in the main to a great performance from man-of-the-match Zara Kour.

Horwich made the game safe when Becky Howarth found Jeanette Brew in the area, who in turn found the back of the net making it 2-0.

When Stockport's final chance went begging, denied by Kerry Mahon's goal-line clearance, the game was up for them.

Kour had a chance to cap her performance with a goal but her finish went wide of the goal.

Following their win, Horwich will face Didsbury Northern Ladies fourths in round two on December 2.

n Horwich's men dropped their first league points of the season in a 1-1 draw at home to Urmston seconds in the North West Hockey League Division Five North South, Dave Fox scoring their goal.
