THIS week’s picture from the vaults of The Bolton News features the Bolton Wyresdale team of 1978 that was preparing for two finals in two days in May of that year.

Coached by former Central Area heavyweight boxing champion, Peter Freeman – who featured in The Bolton News' Your Sport section on Tuesday – the side made it to the Hospital Cup final, against Park United at Burnden Park, and the Westhoughton Charity Cup final, where they faced St Thomas' at Daisy Hill the following day.

Do you recall how they got on or do you recognise any of the players?

Email david.pye@nqnw.co.uk with any memories.

THE second picture this week was published on December 5 and features the Westhoughton Rangers Under-16s team from May 1989.

Mike Chamberlain got in touch and said: "I was pleasantly surprised to see our young selves in The Bolton News in the team photo of Westhoughton Rangers U16s.

"With a few of us cobbling together memories and names, here's the best we could do, back, from left are, ?, Andy Farmer, Shane Jones, Lee Gibbs, Michael Chamberlain, Matt Taylor, Scott Davies, John Bullough; front, Lee Robinson, one of the Nuttall twins, Steve Myatt, Gary Bradshaw, Danny Kent, Matthew Unsworth, Carlton Addison.

"There were some great players amongst us, managed by the much respected John Meadows and eagerly helped by Garry Gott.

"I played the majority of my Sunday morning football there in the Bolton Boys' Federation, along with Scott Davies, Lee Gibbs, Danny Kent, Matt Unsworth, Lee Robinson, Matt Taylor and Carlton Addison – we loved playing for the club that much.

"I believe the chairman of the time, John Morris, is still chairman today and his son, Keith, now deputy chairman, always encouraged us as youngsters.

"In our era, we were constantly up against the likes of Moss Bank and then Bolton Whites, who were the cream of the BWFC School of Excellence that some of us also attended.

"There were no airs and graces with us – footballers with a passion to win and play good football while we did it, no shirkers in a tackle either.

"We reached the cup final in our last year together, unfortunately losing to Bolton Whites at Horwich RMI's Grundy Hill on a dry and scorching evening in 1989.

"Other highlights include playing in a snow blizzard with Keith trying to keep the lines visible with a brush and great battles against Farnworth Boys and Atherton Colls.

"As Rangers did not provide an older age set-up, after 16 we went our separate ways but some of have kept in touch through social media and after this photo being shown we've set up a past players' page so if anyone would like to join they can send an email to me at michael@opmi.co.uk.

"Cheers for the memories."

Kathy Meadows also got in touch and said: "I have just seen the article on the ‘My Westhoughton Page’ on Facebook regarding the Westhoughton Rangers article.

"My dad, John Meadows, was the manager of this team at the time and I’m sure he has lots of fond memories."

Meanwhile, Dan Kent emailed: "I have just seen the Westhoughton Rangers picture – I was the captain off the under-16 team."
