CANON Slade were appropriate first winners of a cup named in honour of their long-time PE teacher Carol Brooking.

They hosted a new inter-school mixed relay swimming competition at Bolton One, which recognised the input Mrs Brooking had on sport at Canon Slade as well as in both the town and the region.

A number of schools from around the region were invited to take part, and it was such a success plans are in place to expand it by inviting more schools next year and make it an annual event.

Teams consisted of two girls and two boys racing medley and freestyle relays at junior, inter, and senior age groups with all members of the teams swimming 50 metres.

Canon Slade won the junior and inter medleys and senior freestyle and the Bradshaw school were overall winners by one point from Ripley St Thomas, who won the senior medley and junior freestyle, while Bury Grammar, who won the inter freestyle, finished third overall.

Mrs Brooking spent 27 years teaching PE at Canon Slade – the last five of which as head of the department.
