EGERTON motorbike racer Andy Guy had a mixed weekend on his debut in the Thundersport GB series at Donington Park.

Guy, aged 37, finished second and fourth in two of his races in the 600 Sportsman class but crashed out of another as he stepped up to a new level of competition having won the No Limits Racing Club 600 championship by over 100 points in 2017.

The truck driver rode his 675 Triumph in three races which saw competitors in different classes take to the track at the same time, and Guy described the event as “the most intense racing I’ve ever experienced.”

The weekend started well for Guy as he came from well down in the field to place second in his class – and seventh overall – in his very first Thundersport GB race.

His second race seemed to be going just as smoothly as he found himself in the leading pack for the first few laps – setting personal best track times in the process – but he suffered a heavy crash on the fourth which ended his race.

In Guy’s third and final race of the weekend he enjoyed another fast start, getting up to fifth overall, but injuries from the crash took their toll and he ended up finishing fourth in his category.

Guy said afterwards: “My arms and shoulders were a little battered and and they gave up on me.

“We have to find our feet in this new series which is a complete change from what I’m used to. The pace is so fast that you have to be on lap-record pace for 15 laps in a nose-to-tail train of riders whilst passing and being passed. It’s a real eye-opener.

“We clearly have a lot to learn and build on but I'm confident we can make good on it – I’m a quick learner!”

The next round of the Thundersport GB championship takes place at Oulton Park, Cheshire, on April 20-21.
