BURNDEN’S Robert Short led the club’s challenge in the Rivington 10-mile trail race, finishing eighth overall with a superb time of 1hrs 14mins 35secs.

Paul Duke, Steve Nolan and Martyn Pollitt made sure the club had four finishers in the first 20. Duke was 11th overall and first V40 in 1:15:30, Nolan took the V55 in 12th position with 1:15:58 and Pollitt was third V55 in 20th place with 1:18:04.

In the women’s race, Paula Pilling was first F40 in 1:25:02 while Kirsty White took the F45 prize in 1:28:24.

Gwen Kinloch and Anne Ferguson dominated the F55 group, Kinloch winning the category in 1:28:58 and Ferguson second in 1:36:35.

The club had three finishers in the top four F50 category places. Isaline Pollitt was second in 1:31:28, Shirley Staveley third with her time of 1:33:02 and Lyndsay Darbyshire fourth in 1:36:36.

Other notable age group successes included Andy Staveley, who was fourth V55 in 1:20:53, Pete Hopley, second V50 in 1:24:05, Tony Wall, second V60 in 1:28:32, Mumtaz Patel, fourth F45 in 1:36:17, Phil Glassbrook, second V70 in 2:02:28, and Don Taylor, third V65 1:43:52.

Marcus Taylor registered a marathon personal best at Manchester and dipped under three hours for the first time, crossing the line in 2:59:23.

Lee White was desperately close to joining him in the sub-three club on the day but had to settle for the excellent time of 3:02:41. Gareth Doherty was the club’s third finisher in 3:30:42.

Liz McLellan was the first Burndener to finish the women’s race a few minutes later with her time of 3:35:26.

Linda O’Byrne (3:52:27) and Marcus Chester (3:55:48) also came in under four hours.

Gayle Gerrard (4:11:52), Denise Hodgkinson (4:32:48), Nadia Raza (4:47:07) and Neil Critchley (5:13:45) completed the club’s involvement.

Sally and Alec Cottrill also tackled 42k but they travelled to Paris for theirs.

They finished together in a time of 4:59:16.

Adam Holmes took part in the Fleetwood 10K and completed the race in 52:21.

Four members chose to test themselves over three disciplines at the West Lancs Sprint Triathlon at Edge Hill University. A 400m pool swim was followed by an 18.5k bike ride and a 5k run to finish off.

Nia Bell was quickest in a total time of 1:31:02. She completed the swim in 11:14 and covered the bike course in 45:52 before a 28:58 run.

Julie Riddle was only a couple of minutes adrift with a combined time of 1:33:30. She was out of the pool in 12:12 before taking 46:47 on the bike and covering the 5k in 27:57.

Jessica Sammon’s time of 1:39:36 was made up of a 9:09 swim, 48:33 bike ride and 33:23 run.

Ged Tanner registered 1:40:48 with a swim time of 12:34, 1:01:06 on the bike and a quick 22:22 run to finish off.
