HORWICH'S Graham Schofield won the MV60 county title at the Lancashire fell championships in Pendle and Mark Walsh was third in the MV50 category as the club enjoyed a good meeting.

Some juniors were out at Pendle after a strong showing at the Rivington Pike race where Fern O’Brien was first under-nine girl, Harrison Stokes was second overall at u11s and Charlotte Vickers was first girl at u11s.

In the older age categories at the Pike race, Toby Middleton was third overall at u15s and Milly Lever was second girl in that age group.

At u17s, Luke Milliken won, showing he is following well in the running steps of his father Dave who, in 31st place, was first home for Horwich this week at the Coledale Horseshoe fell race.

At Pendle, Charlotte Wilkinson finished sixth girl at u13s, building on a strong set of results for a relative newcomer to fell running.

Earlier in the week, Toby Middleton had given seasoned senior fell runner Andy Ford a run for his money and finished only seven seconds behind him in the Bunny Run at Haworth.

Ford is concentrating on the endurance fell events in the RunFurther series this year and was recovering at the Bunny Run from the Lakes Mountain 42, cut back to only 27 miles and 6,000 feet of ascent in the face of the weather last weekend.

He finished in eighth place and after two races in the 12-race series he is third.

Five Horwich runners ran the Greater Manchester Marathon with Geoff Leech achieving a fine personal best, having taken up running only five years ago.

Matthew Wilson was first Harrier home and there were also fine results from several women running for the Harriers.

In Paris, Lawrence Pinnell, club champion in 2016/17, achieved another personal goal by completing the marathon despite injury setbacks.

In the Curley’s 5k trail series after two races Lewis Wilkes is second overall and first u20.

His father Neil Wilkes is in pole position in the MV50 series after two first places for the age category, while David Barnes is currently first in the MV60 series, as is Gillian Smith in the FV65 series.

Another of the popular Mad Bull events took place last weekend with the 10-mile Rivington trail race where Tony Hesketh was second in the V65 category.

In parkrun, Suzanne Budgett was second woman at Witton, while at Haigh Woodland Imogen Andreassen, an u10, was second female to finish, achieving a great 77-per-cent grading.

Marty Arnot-Smith, a regular at Queens Park junior parkrun, finished 10th of 89 in Australia in the Brisbane cross country race.
