HORWICH'S Nick Leigh put in a fine display to win the Bolton Hill Marathon by 14 minutes from the runner-up.

It was the club's second consecutive win in the Time2Run events after Mike Cayton’s triumph at the Race to the Mast last week.

Meanwhile, Robert Seddon was Horwich’s sole representative in the British Athletics Mountain running championships where, as a 17-year-old, he did really well to take 21st place in the under-20 category – an experience that will stand him in good stead.

Tony Hesketh took a break from organising races and won his first MV70 category prize at the Grasmere Gallop trail race.

Graham Schofield continues to comfortably win the MV60 prizes at fell races and this week it was at Kelbrook, where the course is perfect for his skill at fast downhill running.

Just over the county border in Ribblesdale, Mark Walsh won the MV50 category on Pen y Ghent.

On Sunday the Bolton Hill half marathon saw Michael Salmon finish as second V55 runner.

Also on Sunday, the Area Fell Grand Prix at Edenfield saw a fine run from Michael Chadderton who was fourth, improving his series placing to fifth despite a wrong turning in the race.

Michael’s dad, Gary, was third MV55, keeping third place in the MV55 series. Doug Fleming and Lawrence Pinnell made up the team to slightly improve position in the league to fifth place.

On quite different terrain, namely the beach at beautiful Abersoch in north Wales, Milly Lever was out to give everyone a run for their money if they wanted to wrest last year's Beach Chief title away from her.

This year Milly was a close fourth place for the all-age females and no doubt will be back next year as this is becoming something of a team destination for Horwich juniors with four others joining her this year. Jack Barrago was the second Horwich finisher.

Last week saw the latest round of the Youth Development League at Blackpool where Isaac Parker got two first places at 200m and in the long jump, both of which were personal best performances, as well as a second place in the 400m.

Chloe Brewin had a first place in the 200m, also gaining a PB, while Horwich had a great team result with second place in the u17 men’s 4x100m relay.

At parkrun, Isabella Merritt got a new PB in first place at the Queens Park junior parkrun where Fern O’Brien also got a PB in eighth place.

Richard Howarth was first yet again at Cuerden Valley and Luke Brindle got a new PB at Bolton where he was third home.

Meanwhile Peter Heneghan, as an u80, nearly matched Luke in age grading at Crichton parkrun in Dumfries.

Nigel Clementson bettered them with an age grading of nearly 75 per cent at Conwy.

The Middleton family were in Olso and all took part in the Tøyen parkrun – Toby finished eighth with the second-best age-graded time.
