HORWICH athlete Tom Grundy took the spoils at the Edgworth 10k Reservoir trail race.

He followed up his second place in April at the Bolton 10k with a fine result in hot conditions.

Rob Jackson was fifth overall and a clear winner in the M50 category – also well clear of the first M40 runner. Another Horwich victory came at the Hendersons End fell race where Nick Leigh won a hill event in Bolton for the second week in succession following his Hill half-marathon triumph.

For the second year running Sam Wardle had to settle for second place. He had lost out to Phil Marsden a year ago.

Mark Walsh (M50) and Tony Varley (M70) took age-category wins. Varley won the prize in a sprint finish with fellow Harrier Michael Crook, impressive after completing a tough new course for the race.

On the same evening, and in similar sultry conditions at Alexandra Park, was the first in the City of Manchester 5k series, where Andrew Crickmore and James Jordan were nip and tuck for third and fifth places.

The following evening the action moved to the pleasant Astley Park for the second race in Chorley’s trail race series.

Richard Howarth strengthened his series lead by finishing third on the night to follow up on his first place in round one of the series. Stephen Williams was second M60 to former Harrier Paul Muller – the same result as in the first race.

The juniors had a big turnout of 30 athletes. Matthew Flatters settled for second place this time and shares the series lead with Jake Dickinson from Liverpool. Lucas Milliken was a close third.

For the girls, Isabella Merritt continued her consistently-high performance levels with first place, closely followed by Milly Lever, both finishing in the top 10 overall just behind Isaac Battye.

There was also an age-category win for Georgina Heath and a second place at under-11 for Emma Bradley.

At the Greater Manchester Schools' Championships, Ella Pendlebury won bronze in the junior 1500m race.

There were personal bests for Robert Seddon (3,000m), Matthew Mair (800m) and Lucy Dixon (800m).

In the Lancashire events, Milly Lever won the 1500m silver medal and Matthew Flatters had a new PB at 1500m. Meanwhile, at the Joe Moran Memorial Veterans event at Sportcity the juniors track and field coach Trevor Williams got first place in the javelin and three other event podium finishes.

In parkrun, Richard Howarth had another first place at Cuerden Valley, ahead of Gareth Booth, while Andrew Crickmore was second at Bolton.

At the Queens Park junior parkrun, Ethan Isaacs was a first-timer and first home, followed by Jack Barrago and Marty Arnot-Smith with new PBs.
