THE extreme weather conditions not only affected outdoor sports but severely affected many badminton fixtures.

All games scheduled to be played in the week beginning January 4 were postponed due to the big freeze, and clubs will look to rearrange their fixtures as soon as possible.

Several results are still outstanding from last week’s fixtures, however all four matches took place in Section E.

Section D staged a hotly-contested duel between Moorside A, who are currently eighth, and fourth-placed Forrest F, which ended all square.

Moorside’s first couple, Sue Beamer and Russ Beswick, took the first games 21-18, 21-16 against Lizzie Smith and Chris Travis. At third mixed, the visiting pair of Helen Peters and Mark Allen claimed close victories over Hazel Pennington and Rob Halliwell 23-21, 21-18 and going into the mixed, Moorside were leading 6-4.

Shott and Peters took the first ladies doubles 22-20, however Beamer and Pennington claimed the second game 21-7.

The first men’s doubles pairing of Chris Mealor and Allen got Forrest back into the game with a 21-11, 21-12 win.

Moorside took the second ladies doubles 21-10, 21-17, however with strong performances by Allen and Travis in the final men’s games, Forrest claimed a 9-9 draw from a very close match.

Moorside C maintained their position at the top of Section E with a 15-3 win against Metros D, while Moorside B claimed a 15-3 win over Forrest G.

Wins for both Moorside teams, means there are three teams on 16 points at the top of the section.

Elsewhere in Section D Sharples C claimed their fifth straight victory with an 11-7 win at Smithills A.

On Wednesday Forrest C continued their dominance of Section C with a 16-2 victory over Markland Hill E.

DL Farnworth B, currently second in the league claimed a 12-6 win over Forrest D, who are four points behind them in third position.

Next week sees the quarter finals of the Jane Fletcher Memorial and the Robert Cup.

Deane A are scheduled to play Deane B, and in the Robert Cup Moorside B will face Moorside D. Both fixtures should be close encounters.
