RUGBY UNION:Birchfield 15 Bury 14

BURY do not travel well and even the short hop of 30 miles seems to mean a slow and inconsistent early period.

This was borne out by conceding a try in the eighth minute when Birchfield moved the ball simply to score a converted try.

They heavily defeated Birchfield in the reverse fixture earlier in the season, but this was a very different performance.

The home side added to their points in the seventh minute of extra time, when, from a set-scrum five metres out, they went down the blindside and scored on the overlap. Serious words were said at half time by coach Chris Willis and Bury responded by scoring after 12 minutes. A simple lineout catch moved out quickly to centre Mark Campbell who saw the gap and scored a try by the posts which was converted by Ian Webb.

Bury were playing much the better rugby during the half and levelled the scores when left wing Callum Paton crossed in the corner. Ian Webb edged Bury into a two-point lead with a fine conversion.

With 10 minutes remaining Bury’s dominance continued, but against the run of play the match official deemed a Bury tackle dangerous and the penalty attempt by their number eight forward cleared the posts to give Birchfield the lead.

Bury made two more serious assaults on the try line, both getting to within five metres but could not make the hard yards. Bury welcome North Manchester to Radcliffe Road on Saturday, kick off 2.15pm, hoping to reverse adefeat earlier in the season.
