Leigh Centurions 52 Whitehaven 0

After two 50-point victories in as many weeks, Leigh Centurions went on the charge for further tries and continued their 100 per cent start to the Kingstone Press Championship with another formidable points rampage.

Leigh scored nine tries in total with some scintillating attacking, particularly in the first half when they cut loose to register 36 points.

Tom Armstrong cut through after 11 minutes to open the scoring following a spirited opening gambit by the visitors.

Armstrong followed up for his second three minutes later and Leigh were virtually out of sight when Whitehaven’s Cain Southernwood chipped over and Gregg McNally intercepted his inside pass to stride 80 metres with less than 20 minutes on the board.

Martin Ridyard goaled all three to make it 18-0 and take him to 300 goals for the club.

Things got even better for the high speed Centurions as Westhoughton Lions old-boy Ryan Brierley laid a try on for Tommy Goulden and the scrum-half then found his scoring groove after half an hour.

Three minutes from the break Leigh scored the try of the game as Liam Kay burst a two man tackle from inside his own half and then beat a further four men to the line, including former Super League winger Shaun Ainscough.

Ridyard goaled to add his sixth but the Centurions unfortunately saw their lynchpin go off with an injury before the break.

Early in the the second half Leigh scored their seventh try when Brierley’s pace proved too much from a scrum and just before the hour the halfback claimed his hat-trick and 11th try of the season when he chased down a clever Sean Penkywicz kick.

Penkywicz, playing his first game of the season was the creative spark for the Centurions final try, 16 minutes from the end when he popped the ball up for Jake Emmitt to drive over the line and Brierley completed the rout with his second goal.
