CHORLEY Golf Club put an end to Great Lever’s astonishing four successive wins last week when the home side completed a superb 6–2 victory.

The Hall o’ the Hill team had only managed one win over their last four encounters but came to life against the league A leaders.

However, despite this set-back, the Farnworth team remain top of the league A table and maintain a significant 15-point lead albeit with a reduced margin after the battle with Chorley.

Chorley’s team captain Dan Wright said: “This was a great result for us against the league leaders after some poor performances of late.

"We hope to move on now although our next match is away at Horwich which is always a difficult contest.”

Great Lever’s top player, Joe Whittaker, held Bill Bromilow for most of their contest until the Chorley’s star closed his match with two birdies on the 16th and 17th followed by a par on the 18th to take the honours.

Wright produced an early win for Chorley and young Gavin Edwards gained a 4&3 victory over Danny Hunt and David Hemmingway beat Ian Marks 2-up.

Chorley’s Andy Taylor was also on form producing a 2&1 win against Great Lever’s Paul Bridge.

In League B, Turton claimed their first victory of the season when they narrowly pipped Old Links with a 4½ -3½ home win.

“It was a tight match” said Old Links team captain Duncan Simm “which could have gone either way”.

This week, Turton host local rivals Harwood which will be a stern test for the visitors if they are to move further up the table.

Indeed, it was Harwood who put Hart Common to the sword last week with a 5–3 scoreline and moved up seven points to maintain fourth place.

Meanwhile, Breightmet claimed a narrow away win against Regent Park last week when they took the honours 4½-3½ and sneaked to within three points of league leaders Old Links.

Regent Park are struggling to attract league players and have asked the League Secretary if they could change their match day from a Tuesday to a Thursday. Regent’s spokesman said “Since a loss of members recently there are fewer players available for league duties but a change to a Thursday evening could be our salvation.”

Deane, who had a free week last week, tonight they host leaders Old Links which should be a close encounter with the hosts needing a win to close the gap.
