JOE Mason and Eidur Gudjohnsen will slug it out for the striker’s spot for Wanderers against Ipswich Town tomorrow.

Neil Lennon has confirmed Craig Davies will miss at least one game with a hamstring problem – leaving him with a selection problem at the Macron Stadium tomorrow.

“Craig will be out for the weekend,” the Whites boss told The Bolton News. “We are hoping he will be fit for Millwall if not he should be okay for Blackburn.

“It is not a tear; it's a strain. But if you push it, it might get a lot worse. We are not going to take any chances.

“Craig has done very well and he is our leading scorer. When you lose a player like that it is a problem. So we will have to think how we are going to play for the weekend.”

Kevin McNaughton will also miss tomorrow’s game but could be back in contention for next Friday’s pre-Christmas trip to The Den.

But it is up front where Lennon has a choice to make, including the potential of Gudjohnsen making a surprise return, just days after his international clearance was granted.

Asked if the 36-year-old Icelander was fit to face Ipswich, Lennon was reluctant to go into detail.

The manager refused to rule out the idea Gudjohnsen could be plunged straight into the action, however, six months after his last competitive fixture for FC Brugges in Belgium and 14 years since he last pulled on a Bolton shirt, coincidentally in a play-off semi-final against Ipswich.

“I am not going to give anything away but he will come into contention,” he said. “He is looking fit and in good condition.

“I have a few things I could do – Max Clayton can play up there while Joe Mason could come into consideration.

We are not short of options. Maybe Joe is thinking he hasn't had opportunity under us. And he would be right in thinking that.”

Mason has started just once for Lennon since his arrival as manager and reports in South Wales claim Cardiff City are willing to recall him in January because of his lack of football.

Lennon insists there has been no discussion between the two clubs about cutting short his loan – but hinted he could be willing to discuss the matter in January.

“We have had no confirmation about Joe one way or another. But we may do.”
