EMILE Heskey and Eidur Gudjohnsen will report for training with Wanderers at the end of this month despite not knowing for sure if they will be at the club next season.

The veteran strikers will be at Euxton on June 29 for fitness testing with just days remaining on their current contracts.

Neil Lennon confirmed at the end of last season he wants to retain both players’ services but The Bolton News understands neither has yet been made a firm offer to stay at the Macron Stadium, 10 days before the squad return to work.

Ex-England striker Heskey has trained alone this summer to stay in shape and had previously said a deal with Wanderers was "close" to agreement.

Gudjohnsen worked with MLS club Philadelphia Union to prepare for Iceland’s European Championship qualifier last Friday, and has also indicated he wants to stay on next year.

Both proved important figures in the second half of last season, yet questions have been asked in some quarters over whether they will play enough games next term to substantiate the financial outlay to sign them for another 12 months.

Lennon is clearly balancing a delicate budget and in what has been a frustrating summer, the lack of funds at his disposal has hampered his ability to close deals so far.

At this point, Gary Madine and Ben Amos are the only two new faces expected on the first day of training, although it has been reported that Lennon could offer trials during the training camp in Austria in July.

Lennon still has some major holes to plug before the season starts in just 51 days but news that neither Heskey or Gudjohnsen has yet been offered a contract comes as some surprise, given his enthusiasm on the subject at the end of the last campaign.

“We will be offering new contracts to Heskey and Gudjohnsen because they've made a massive contribution,” he said. “If we didn’t feel they had then we’d tell them but they’ve been immense, and not just on the field. Their influence in the dressing room has been fantastic.

“Heskey has been different class and Gudjohnsen has got six goals in his last 18 games. He’s back in the Iceland team and they have a good chance of making the European Championship. I think it would be a fitting way for him to end his career if he did that – a great story.”
