JIMMY Phillips would have no qualms calling on Tyler Garratt again despite his late mistake against Cardiff City last weekend.

The young defender blotted his copybook by conceding a 94th-minute penalty, converted by Peter Whittingham to give the Bluebirds a winner.

But interim boss Phillips is backing Garratt to shrug off any lingering disappointment, something he reckons has been aided by the reaction of the Wanderers dressing room.

“I don’t think it will affect him,” he told The Bolton News. “The experienced players in the dressing room were all very complimentary and told him to get his head up – these things happen in football.

“That feedback from his team-mates was very important.

“I think he’ll recognise the mistake and hopefully not repeat it too often.”

The defensive stubbornness shown last weekend with 10 men may well be needed again tomorrow against a Hull City side who are now guaranteed a play-off spot.

The Tigers register more shots on goal per game than any other side in the Championship but Phillips is pleased with some of the progress being made on the training ground.

“It was an uphill task last week but I think we are starting to recognise we can’t be as open as we have been, and particularly away from home,” he said.

“That is something which will need to carry on next season. We will be a scalp everywhere we go in League One.

“Hull were going for promotion but now they have safely found their way into the play-offs. It hasn’t turned out to be the game they expected but we still want something out of it.

“They are a very experienced team and they have been in and around the Premier League and Championship for a while. They are very dangerous opponents.”
