KEN Anderson has warned Wanderers fans NOT to expect a busy January in the transfer market.

Preserving the squad which goes into this weekend’s game at Chesterfield a point behind leaders Scunthorpe United will be the aim of the game next month.

The Whites have cast their eye over contingency targets – Liverpool’s Cameron Branagan being one – but have not made plans to add to their squad unless they pick up a serious injury.

Anderson has stated on several occasions that offers for young stars such as Josh Vela and Zach Clough will not be welcomed and after meeting with Phil Parkinson on Monday he is confident the squad can be held together under all but the most outlandish bids.

“I have discussed it with the manager and I don’t intend to sell any players,” he told The Bolton News. “That is not to say if someone came in and said ‘here’s £10million for Zach Clough’ we wouldn’t take a commercial view, but we don’t expect that.

“I don’t see many, if any, players coming in because I don’t think we have got room for them.

“Phil has done the opposite of what you might expect a manager to do and said he’d rather keep what he has got. Players coming in take time to settle, as we saw in the last window, and I think unless we have got injuries or something happens between now and January I can’t see anyone coming in. The manager has said he doesn’t want them.”

Anderson is optimistic a deal will be agreed with Newcastle United to extend Sammy Ameobi’s loan from Newcastle United and also hinted at his Q&A on Tuesday night that James Henry’s deal from Wolves could also be taken further.

Ameobi has been a big hit since arriving at the Macron – with Anderson’s son Lee a driving force behind the deal.

“We’ve had discussions with Newcastle United and we are hopeful we will reach an agreement,” he said. “Sammy wants to stay, he doesn’t want to go anywhere, and he wants to see the season out here.”

On Tuesday night it was confirmed that Wanderers will look to shed many of the 17 players who are out of contract next summer in an effort to bring the wage budget under complete control.

Jay Spearing, Lawrie Wilson, Gary Madine and Liam Trotter are among the players whose deal runs out next July but renegotiations are unlikely to take place until the end of the season, when the Whites hope to be heading towards the Championship.

“When we get to July we then become sustainable,” Anderson said. “We then cut our cloth accordingly, unlike the way the club has been run in the past.

“I look at the players we brought in this season – Mark Beevers being a good example. He is providing a good service for the wage he is earning.

“Our job with our recruitment team is to find the players who are out there, because they are out there. We will probably make more use of loans next year, if we get to where we want to be in the Championship. We would have done that in the summer but realistically Premier League players only want to drop down one level.”

Anderson has plans to bring in top flight youngsters looking for more first team experience – and revealed that a bid had been made for Chelsea’s England Under-21 international Tammy Abraham in the summer.

Abraham signed for Bristol City and now has 13 goals to his name in just 24 appearances for the Robins this season.

“We liked him, we talked to the club, but he wasn’t going to come to League One. He wanted to go to the Championship. That will be the kind of player who could become available to us.

“Look back in this club’s history at people like Jack Wilshere. Bring that type of player in and it can make a difference.”
