SOUTHEND United head groundsman Ken Hare has been sacked after Wanderers’ postponed game at Roots Hall on Saturday.

An 11am pitch inspection from referee Charles Breakspear deemed a large part of the pitch unplayable, forcing hundreds of Bolton fans to turn back home.

Hare had been the Blues’ groundsman for 27 years but reports on the day suggested that the top grade of pitch covering had not been used to protect a problematic area of the pitch.

The error was deemed sufficiently serious for Southend chairman Ron Martin to take swift action.

A club statement issued to our sister title, The Southend Echo read: “People generally lose their position as a result of not doing their job.

“The necessary decision surrounding Mr Hare was a disappointment and of course not taken lightly.

“Very few people have been dismissed at this football club over the past 20 years and that even extends to managers.”

Saturday’s game was the first to be postponed at Roots Hall since January 2013.
