PHIL Parkinson won’t be making any Churchillian addresses to the Wanderers dressing room before kick-off at Shrewsbury tomorrow.

Four straight wins have put the Whites into a handy second-placed position in League One but the manager insists he has tried to keep his own input to a minimum on match day.

“We still do all the preparation on the opposition but we want them to be a self-managing group,” he told The Bolton News. “There is so much to play for, so much at stake, that they are driving each other on. That is the spirit we wanted to create and, in fairness, for most of the season they have been exactly that way.”

Though Shrewsbury hover just above the relegation zone, Parkinson will be looking for the same application from his side that they showed against play-off chasers Oxford and Fleetwood in recent weeks.

“The body language of the team is important and when something goes against you on the pitch you cannot have heads going down, or arms being thrown up in the air,” he said. “You want your players to look each other in the eye and say ‘right, come on lads, we’ve got to go again.’ That can’t come from the touchline. It has to come from the pitch.

“It is happening and the moment but it has absolutely got to continue. We’re pleased with the form but we really cannot get carried away and start telling people how good we are.

“There is another test at Shrewsbury, a tough game against a team who are fighting for every point they can get.”
