PHIL Parkinson plans to be patient in order to land his top targets this summer.

Wanderers’ promotion has been confirmed for less than a week and yet the manager joked his phone had been “going crazy” with agents’ offers in the past few days.

Parkinson hinted, however, that to land the players he feels will make a significant difference in the Championship next season he will have to wait a little longer before leaping into negotiations.

The Whites boss is keen to ensure he has cover – and hopeful he will not shackled by a transfer embargo – and says he will not rush into agreements with the players currently on the market.

“Of course, I really want to rebuild this club and make sure it’s competitive next year,” he told The Bolton News. “I’ve been in this position many times before and sometimes you have to be patient for signings. The ones you get early are the ones you don’t really have to compete for.

“We want to try and get the very best of what our budget will allow. And if that means being a little bit patient, then that’s what you do.”

Parkinson is also looking forward to a short break before diving headlong into preparing for next season.

He will meet with out-of-contract players next week to discuss their future, after which Wanderers fans should have a better idea which positions he will need to strengthen next season.

“After that it’s a different type of work,” he said. “I don’t have to turn up at the training ground every day but there are different types of meetings with agents and players – it’ll be enjoyable.”

Parkinson feels he has got a core who will cope with the step up in class, some of whom were involved previously with Wanderers in the second tier. But he wants to avoid problems he faced this season when injuries to players like Lawrie Wilson and Gary Madine left him having to rip up his plans and start again.

“We have got players who will cope with that higher level of football but equally I don’t want to be watching training on Thursday or Friday with my fingers crossed that someone doesn’t get injured.”
