PFA chief Gordon Taylor has called on the EFL to “take action” as several out-of-contract Wanderers continue to wait for last month’s wages and bonuses.

The players’ union boss was told outstanding payments would be settled by the end of the week – but The Bolton News understands that has not materialised.

Wanderers insist players including Jay Spearing, Lawrie Wilson, Mark Davies and Dean Moxey will get their money.

Taylor – himself a former Bolton player – expressed his concern in a statement issued to the newspaper this evening.

“The matter is being taken very seriously especially as players who have been released have not been paid,” he said.

“We have informed the league and expect them to take action to put this right.”

Ken Anderson explained last weekend why he had been reluctant to put in the reported £500,000 to fund June’s wage and the associated promotion bonuses to the squad.

His attempts to buy shares owned by Dean Holdsworth and settle a loan debt worth £5million plus interest had failed to reach a conclusion by the end of last month.

“This lack of a resolution was the main reason why the bonuses owed to the players were not paid on time as I was reluctant to continue to solely fund the club with still no certainty of an agreement being reached with both parties,” he said in a column printed on the official website.

“However, as I have solely funded the club with substantial amounts during these ongoing discussions over the last few months, I have agreed to continue to do so for the time being, in the hope that an agreement will be reached with both parties in the short term.

“Accordingly, the players will be paid the outstanding monies this week.”

The chairman is looking to restructure the bonus system to ensure it does not dig as deeply into cash-flow in the future.

A winding-up petition against Holdsworth’s Sports Shield BWFC company has now adjourned for a further four weeks – taking it past another pay run – which means the situation could now spill into the new season.
