IT is full steam ahead for home-bound Wanderers tomorrow as Phil Parkinson goes in search of their first league victory.

They have been clocking up the miles with three successive away-days, coming out of the trips to Crewe, Millwall and Birmingham with great credit.

After coming from behind to progress in the Carabao Cup at Crewe’s expense they grafted their way to draws – which could conceivably have been more – at their Championship rivals.

Now Parkinson’s men get back on home turf to face Derby County, and the manager is expecting his side to come out all guns blazing.

“We were more on the front foot at Birmingham, I think Fil (Morais) added to that,” said Parkinson after the goalless draw at St Andrew’s.

“But it’s not intentional to sit back as a team, I can assure everybody of that.

“Sometimes it’s the opposition pinning you back but we had a ball carrier in the team like Fil, which is really important.

“We’re looking forward to getting back home, it’ll be good to be back after three away trips.

“We want to be back home and playing in the same manner we have done so far this season.

“It’s not a tactic for us to sit deep, it’s a tactic for us to be organised and structured but when we got the chance we had runners breaking forward from all areas and I thought we looked a threat.”

After his pre-season programme was knocked out of kilter by England under-20s duty, Adam Armstrong is now operating at something like full fitness.

And that is great news for Whites fans, who can expect to see more impressive showings like the one the Newcastle loanee put in at Birmingham.

Parkinson brought him off in favour of Adam Le Fondre with 20 minutes to go and Wanderers pushing for a winning goal. But with the 20-year-old forward having experienced this level with Barnsley he will have a big part to play in what the manager says is bound to be a physical, season-long battle.

“I’m very pleased with Adam, he gave us good quality and worked hard, that’s important, he was great,” said the boss. “He and Gaz (Madine) worked hard together up front and the two lads who came on, Aaron (Wilbraham) and Alfie, put in a real good shift for us when it was needed as well.

“People say as you go up the divisions the teams get bigger, stronger and fitter, so physically we have got to be ready for this next challenge.”
