WANDERERS will NOT be making a move for former captain Jay Spearing, with Phil Parkinson insisting he needs “something different” in his squad.

Ex-Liverpool midfielder Spearing, who was pictured this week training with League One Blackpool, has been linked with a return to Bolton since his contract at the Macron expired in the summer.

Parkinson held talks with the 28-year-old and his representatives but it is understood the timing of the EFL’s decision to reduce salary caps for clubs in embargo made a deal impossible.

The Whites boss left the door open for talks to resume at the end of pre-season but the decision was taken recently to move on completely and Parkinson is now looking for a more attack-minded midfielder as cover for Josh Vela.

“We had Jem Karacan, Josh Cullen and Derik Osede who are all that type of player and it’s difficult to bring another one in which will just replicate it,” the manager explained.

“Any money we have got, we felt we needed to bring something different into the team.

“It’s like when Josh Vela is out it’s difficult to find a replacement and we have been searching high and low for a player of that ilk.

“With what went on over the summer, what Jay was looking for didn’t fit in with the Football League and we had to look at players who would.”
