A LAST-MINUTE penalty from Connor Hall earned Wanderers’ Under-23s a 3-2 win over his former club Sheffield United at Leyland.

David Lee’s side moved into second place in Professional Development League North table, leapfrogging the Blades, as Hall continued his fine season with two spot kicks.

Defender Adam Mitchell also got on the scoresheet for the Whites, who brought senior stars like Jem Karacan, Craig Noone and Stephen Darby into the side to gain some match sharpness.

The game was only 10 minutes old when Jeff King was tripped by Morgan Williams, leaving ex-Blade Hall to convert from the spot.

Wanderers doubled their lead through Mitchell, who headed home Noone’s floated cross despite claims of offside from the visiting defence.

Sheffield United upped their game in the second half and Jordan Hallam rattled the crossbar with a long-range effort. First team striker Ched Evans was brought on in his return from injury and within five minutes he had equalised with a header from Ryan Mallon’s cross.

Charlie Scott completed the Blades’ comeback with a volley but there was a sting in the tail as King was tripped in the box again by Williams, who was handed a second yellow card.

Hall – who recently made his first team debut in the FA Cup - stepped up to make it 14 goals in 11 games for the development squad this season.

The 19-year-old is likely to be allowed out on loan later this month, with a cluster of League One and Two clubs looking to take him on.
