WANDERERS’ former players donated the proceeds of their inaugural charity golf day to The Christie, Europe’s largest single-site cancer centre.
The money was raised by BWFC Former Players Association in memory of ex-Whites striker Garry Jones and all former players who have passed away.
Jones was treated at The Christie and spoke passionately and emotionally about the wonderful staff who treated him and so many others so well.
Jones, who was a popular member of the players’ association, died in April 2016.
He made nearly 250 appearances for Wanderers, scoring 55 goals between 1968 and 1978, including all three goals in a 3-0 League Cup victory over Manchester City in front of more than 42,000 spectators at Burnden Park in 1971.
With Jones being the catalyst the former Wanderers were proud to raise £1,000 via their inaugural event at Hart Common Golf Club in Westhoughton late last year.
Jones’ youngest son Tom received the cheque on behalf of the charity at the Sunderland game from some of the club’s former stars Alex Smith, Roy Greaves, Ian Seddon, John Thomas, Peter Nicholson and Steve Walton.
