LAST-DAY drama is nothing new for Wanderers, who have been doing this sort of thing for well over a century.

Tomorrow’s must-win game against Nottingham Forest is the latest in a long line at a club who have never quite got to grips with mid-table obscurity.

Here we look back at some of the famous promotions or relegations which have been sealed on the final weekend of the season.

1910/11

Birmingham 2

Wanderers 1

THE previous week’s victory against Chelsea in front of 40,000 at Burnden Park turned out to be the difference as Bolton suffered a last-day defeat but still got promotion.

West Brom went up as champions of Division Two after Wanderers were beaten at the Blues’ relatively newly-opened St Andrew’s Ground.

1963/64 Wanderers 0

Wolves 4

AN unbroken run of 29 years in Division One came to an agonising end as a Friday-night defeat against Wolves allowed Birmingham to snatch the points they needed to survive.

The Burnden Park game had been brought back to accommodate the Holcombe Brook races but after a heavy defeat, the Blues wrapped things up with a win against Sheffield United.

1972/73

Wanderers 2

Brentford 0

PROMOTION to the Second Division was secured on the last day thanks to goals from Peter Nicholson and John Byrom.

Jimmy Armfield’s side had not made a great start to the game – and the home crowd showed their displeasure before things finally picked up in the second half. The 18 home wins and nine goals conceded at Burnden stand as club records.

1977/78

Wanderers 0

Fulham 0

PROMOTION back to the top flight had been secured amid memorable scenes at Blackburn the week previous but Ian Greaves’ side knew what they had to do to go up as champions.

Tottenham and Southampton fought out a goalless draw to ensure they both accompanied Bolton – much to the continued chagrin of Brighton, who missed out.

1987/88

Wrexham 0 Wanderers 1

THE original Robbie Savage will forever be remembered at Bolton Wanderers for his goal at the Racecourse Ground to ensure promotion for Phil Neal’s men.

With Wolves and Cardiff already up, Bolton had one chance to pip Torquay. The Devon side had already missed one opportunity to go up, losing at Burnley, and then blew another by losing at home to Scunthorpe.

Both men had players sent off – but after Savage’s goal midway through the second half Wanderers held firm through a tense finale.

1997/98

Chelsea 2

Wanderers 0

IT had to come down to goal difference, didn’t it?

Months after the infamous ‘Goal That Never Was’ against Everton, it would be the Toffees who escaped by the skin of their teeth, drawing at Coventry, as Bolton sunk to defeat in the sun at Stamford Bridge.

With 20 minutes to go Everton missed a penalty, giving Bolton hope, but Jody Morris’s late goal confirmed the worst.

2002/03

Wanderers 2 Middlesbrough 1

A WIN was enough for Wanderers to secure a third straight year in the Premier League, at West Ham’s expense.

Per Frandsen and Jay-Jay Okocha scored inside the first 20 minutes but Bolton old boy Michael Ricketts came off the bench to set up a nervous finale.

Wanderers held on, Big Sam danced with Jay Jay, and the good times were about to roll.

2012/13

Stoke City 2

Wanderers 2

OWEN Coyle’s Wanderers bowed out of the Premier League after 11 years having blown a victory which would have made them safe.

Jon Walters opened the scoring for Stoke but goals from Mark and Kevin Davies gave the Whites hope.

A controversial penalty given for a foul on Peter Crouch then gave Walters – a former Bolton player his second from the spot.

Little did Bolton know at the time but had they found another goal, the famous goal Sergio Aguero scored for Manchester City to secure the title would also have made them safe.

2012/13

Wanderers 2

Blackpool 2

NOT strictly a case of ‘up or down’ but who knows what might have happened if Dougie Freedman’s in-form Wanderers had pipped Leicester City to the final play-off place?

The Foxes went on to win the Premier League title but Bolton’s problems were only just beginning as a two-goal fight-back from Chris Eagles and Craig Davies proved insufficient.

2016/17

Wanderers 3

Peterborough 0

A WIN was needed on the final day – and Wanderers never looked like fluffing their lines to gain promotion back to the Championship at the first time of asking.

Jem Karacan, David Wheater and Adam Le Fondre scored the goals to spark a memorable pitch invasion as players and fans celebrated in the sunshine.
