Dougie Freedman challenges Bolton Wanderers players to have stomach for the fight at Millwall

The Bolton News: Wanderers boss Dougie Freedman Wanderers boss Dougie Freedman

DOUGIE Freedman has asked his players if they have the stomach for the fight to step into the Lions’ Den tomorrow afternoon.

Just two points separate Millwall and the Whites, and with confidence clearly fragile in his own camp the Wanderers boss admits a trip South London is a testing proposition.

The last time the Whites travelled to The Den, a 2-1 defeat spelled the end of Owen Coyle’s reign as manager. And with questions being asked about his own job security, Freedman is aware of the importance three points could have on Wanderers’ season.

“We have to be strong, especially with the position the two teams are in right now,” he said.

“This is the challenge and what we’re in this business for – home or away you have got to roll your sleeves up and play these teams.

“I think we needed that game against Burnley and I said to the players ‘look at that, they are second in the table and there’s nothing in that game at all’.

“I am absolutely confident that one day that bubble will burst for us and that confidence will come flooding back. Somewhere along the line we’ve got to have a little, small bit of fortune.

“Yes, the crowd is definitely something you have to deal with at Millwall – and those guys are fanatical supporters. They follow through thick and thin.

“But I am just so sure that we’re on the right track, it has got to start somewhere.”

Loan midfielder Liam Trotter has offered the inside scoop on his parent club despite being ineligible to feature.

“I’ve spent enough time down there to know what’s coming, so it was lovely of him to offer but I’m okay on the advice,” Freedman said.

“It’s disappointing he can’t play, and I know he was determined to go back there but I’m sure there will be another time for him.”
