Matt Mills return from injury is a big boost to Bolton Wanderers boss Dougie Freedman

MATT Mills’ return for Wanderers has given Dougie Freedman food for thought at the heart of his defence – and the Scot insists he is not concerned about making tough choices as his side head for Yeovil tomorrow.

Tim Ream and David Wheater played centre-half against Brighton last weekend, which meant Zat Knight – man of the match in the previous game against Derby – was relegated to the bench.

Mills’ recovery from a knee injury adds another option for Freedman, although Freedman insists his club skipper Knight took his decision to drop him to the bench in a professional manner.

He said: “He was fantastic on Saturday and then Tuesday but I think that took a bit too much out of him, with the stage Zat is at and his age, but he’s never let himself down.

“It was a difficult decision but someone’s got to make it, and that’s me.”

Mills has been one of Wanderers’ most improved players this term, and Freedman admits having him available for the first time since he damaged a knee against Watford will be a boost.

“I think he’s been terrific and his consistency levels have been great but if you ask me what’s changed, it’s been what he’s doing off the field Monday to Friday, and on the training ground,” he said.

“I think you have seen the results of that on the pitch every Saturday.”
